Sugah: Black Love Endures

Gimmie summa dat sugah, baby!

Black love just hits different. Whether it’s an auntie, a best friend, or a lover, Black love is an ever-expanding realm of deep, intimate connection. Black love is parents and grandparents asking, ''Did you get enough to eat?” or when your best friend reminds you that they are your ride or die. Black love is unapologetic, radical self-love despite popular cultural norms.

From long embraces to soulful gazes, “Sugah” (pronounced SHU-gah), celebrates the depth and beauty of Black love in all its forms. It is a proclamation of resistance and a declaration of worth. It is a sultry exploration of another’s tender heart. It is an affirmation that your existence is intentional and needed. Rooted in a culture that remains unshakable by the tremors and torments of a turbulent history, Black love endures.

Black love endures.

With this theme in mind, we invite self-identifying Black artists in Virginia to submit completed works on their interpretation of all forms of Black love. All mediums will be considered: visual arts (including photography & film), performance arts, musicians, etc.

There is no application fee to submit for this exhibition. Please submit your entries using the link below.
